The Power of Reflection

I’ve never been one for New Years Resolutions. It feels like the word “resolution” implies there is currently something wrong with me that needs to be fixed, and maybe it’s just my perfectionism talking but I don’t think it’s very kind to ourselves to focus on the things that need to be fixed when we are in clean slate mode for 2023! So instead, I focus on intentions. Language is important, and gives our brain important cues about how we interpret ourselves and our surroundings.

One of my intentions for 2023 is self-acceptance. Part of the way I’ve been able to do this in the past is by journaling and reflecting. Now - before you roll your eyes like I did when my therapist told me to start journaling - hear me out.

There are numerous emotional and physical benefits to journaling. Y’all know I’m an evidence-based girlie, so you know I gathered research and found that journaling…

improves mindfulness

elevates memory and communication skills

promotes better sleep

boosts the immune system

helps the body heal quicker

I want to intentionally acknowledge writing/journaling is a supplemental form of self-care and prevention rather than a solution on its own. I’m going to be super specific with this particular exercise because there are so many ways you can take this one that it can feel overwhelming without some direction.

Start Here:

Carve out 5 minutes at the beginning of your day and grab your favorite colorful pen and notebook. Maybe you do this while your coffee or tea is brewing. Maybe you have to set your alarm a bit earlier. If you’re resistant to that, I totally get it AND know that you are worth at least trying.

Using color helps information stick around in your brain longer and it’s…more fun. Starting small with time spent journaling can be more accessible - we are more likely to do something when we know we can make time for it. You might even set a timer on your phone if you feel like you need more guidance.

When you start to panic about what to write about, take a breath. You can choose your own prompt or use the one I’m providing below to get started. You literally can’t mess it up. Let your pen move through your thoughts.

A prompt to help you get started: As we transition into a new year, what is changing and what is staying the same? (this could relate to your family, career, passions, pain, anything!)

You can go as in depth with this prompt as you wish. As we often say in our yin practice at Evren, you’ll get out of the exercise what you put into it - so let that guide you as well. Good luck and remember, you literally cannot do it wrong :)
